U.S. AMATEUR HISTORY

U.S. Amateur History

This year’s U.S. Amateur Championship at Cherry Hills will mark the 123rd playing of this prestigious event. The historic William Flynn-designed golf course, set against the panoramic views of the Rocky Mountains, has hosted golf’s most historic championships for 85 years and is intertwined in the fabric of American golf history. Founded in 1922 on 272 acres south of Denver, the club’s history of hosting USGA championships began with the 1938 U.S. Open, the first time the championship was held west of the Mississippi River.

The U.S. Amateur, coming to Cherry Hills for the third time, is the oldest championship presented by the United States Golf Association, having been created in 1895 to attract and identify the nation’s top amateur players. In fact, the championship was created to solve a controversy.

In 1894, two clubs – Newport (R.I.) Golf Club and New York’s St. Andrew’s Golf Club – had conducted top-level invitational tournaments with the nation’s finest players competing in each. Conspicuously, both clubs proclaimed their winners as the national champion.

Before the final day of the St. Andrew’s tournament, it was announced that an association composed of all the clubs in the United States would be formed. This new national governing body would oversee a universally recognized championship and create a written set of rules.

With that, representatives from Newport Golf Club, St. Andrew’s Golf Club, The Country Club in Brookline, Mass., Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, N.Y., and Chicago Golf Club founded the USGA on Dec. 22, 1894, and the inaugural U.S. Amateur Championship was conducted the following year, along with the U.S. Open and U.S. Women’s Amateur. The U.S. Amateur and U.S. Open were conducted at Newport Golf Club during the same week in October.

Since the inaugural event, the U.S. Amateur has enjoyed an illustrious history of great champions, including Bob Jones, Phil Mickelson, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Tiger Woods.

Now hosting its third U.S. Amateur, Cherry Hills has played a pivotal role in that history. Future six-time major winner Phil Mickelson brought home the title in 1990, convincingly defeating Manny Zerman 5-and-4. When Tennessee’s Steven Fox won the U.S. Amateur in 2012, he would have never dreamed that the field he and semifinalist Michael Weaver would have to outlast would go on to be one of the deepest collections of future professional stars in the event's history. Fox survived a 17-man playoff for 14 spots in stroke play to qualify for match play, then defeated Weaver in an epic 37-hole final match – becoming the highest seed (No. 63) to win the Amateur since the USGA began the seeding process in 1985.

Future PGA Tour winners and major champions in that 2012 field included Justin Thomas (15 PGA Tour wins, two majors), Jordan Spieth (13 PGA Tour wins, three majors), Bryson DeChambeau (eight PGA Tour wins, one major), as well as other eventual PGA Tour winners Hideki Matsuyama, Xander Schauffele, Max Homa, Daniel Berger, Talor Gooch, Mackenzie Hughes, Trey Mullinax, Sepp Straka, Corey Conners and Aaron Wise. Together, this group has compiled 70 PGA Tour wins and seven major championships, making it arguably the greatest U.S. Amateur field in modern times.

Notable in USGA championship history, Cherry Hills was also the site of one of the most famous opening shots and monumental rounds in championship history when Palmer drove the first green in the final round of the 1960 U.S. Open and made birdie on his way to victory and a final-round 65. It's also the only U.S. course other than Augusta National, where Palmer and Nicklaus, who won the 1993 U.S. Senior Open, both won a major championship. The champions who have triumphed at Cherry Hills have included some of the game’s greats: Palmer, Nicklaus, Mickelson, Jay Siegel, Hubert Green, Andy North, Ralph Guldahl, Vic Ghezzi, Babe Didrikson-Zaharias and Lewis Oehmig. This year’s U.S. Amateur champion, crowned at historic Cherry Hills, will become an indelible part of that cherished legacy.

1941 PGA – Vic Ghezzi def. Byron Nelson
1950 Western Women’s Open – Babe Zaharias
1960 U.S. Open – Arnold Palmer (280)
